Brief
Create a brand for a festival.
process
I started the process with the research of the theme of the festival. In this case I decided that DIGITAL and SUPERNATURAL would be fitting themes for a festival.
After some consideration I pinpoint 3 attractions that complement each other very well and that can support the digital/supernatural theme: minimal techno, underground rap and digital projections.
The next step was coming up with an illustration, the festival`s image. For this I designed a creature which has alien features, this being in strong connection with the idea of DIGITAL and SUPERNATURAL experiences. To achieve the desire result I used the crab as my main inspiration, mostly because to me, sea creature have a certain alien appearance and also because the front view of a crab looks very similar to an UFO. I accentuated this idea even more in the animated version where the creature moves in a pattern that mimics a hovering object and it appears and disappears as way of teleporting in and out of the digital realm.
To enhance the idea of surrealism even further, the final design of the creature incorporates features not only from crabs and aliens but also from demons (nostril), psychedelics (eyes shaped like upside-down mushrooms) an parasites (Leucochloridium Paradoxum). This approach stimulates the viewers imagination because, the more you look at the creature the more elements you can discover about it.
Next on the list was the logo design. For this I choose a sans-serif geometric font within a geometric shape to emphasise the precise and calculated aspect of the digital environment. Also, the geometric and rigid quality of the logo compliments the natural and organic shape of the illustration.
When it comes to ticket design, due to their shape, I decided to make them self-recyclable, meaning that the tickets can be reused as bookmarks, a physical memory of the event that sticks with audience even after the event is over.
For the badges design I wanted something simple, geometric, with a clear diversification for the VIP ones. Their design is clean, easy to read and with as much negative space as possible.
The last part of the designing process was creating the posters. For them I had two different approaches.
The first one is an informative poster. Due to its nature, this kind of poster contains a lot of information such as participants, dates, websites, sponsors, logo, location and because of this, I was limited in terms of the design. Therefore, I choose a simple design, containing only element that are strictly necessary to achieve its porpoise. At the same time, I wanted to reflect the brand identity, “Digital Insanity”, hence the glitch on the background.
For the second one the key word was SPACE. What I wanted for this poster was to use as much negative space as possible while still respecting the theme of the festival. Therefore, the only elements that ended up in the final design are the name of the event, location and time. On top of the typographical elements, I used geometry to elevate the design. The yellow circle, which is the only spot of colour within this composition, highlights the most important part of the design. It`s substantial size creates an antithesis between the typographical elements which make the design to be easy to grasp by the viewer’s eye. I decided to keep the glitch effect prom the previous design, this time the glitch being more physical than digital (background).
